That is cruel.

And I agree, if someone can afford to de-claw their kitty they can afford to micro-chip in the event the cat escapes accidentally they can be easily reunited with them.

I think taking in a stray is a wonderful thing to do - most people wouldn't even consider bothering to take it to a shelter or vet, much less the commitment to keep it. I would call the local shelters to let them know I found it but beyond that I don't know what else is reasonably expected to track the owner down. The Bumbleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08334162339045336577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19927392.post-28528703060638618172009-06-17T10:10:11.105-05:002009-06-17T10:10:11.105-05:00Your first post didn't include much of this in...Your first post didn't include much of this information. If it had, I wouldn't have been so harsh in regards to your keeping the cat. If the cat was in fact abandoned, then there you are. If you're still checking the local papers, then I commend you. I would still recommend calling the local shelters. My cat was a stray, and I called shelters for two weeks before even committing to adopting the cat, just in case her owner was still out there.

In regards to declawing, we will have to agree to disagree.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19927392.post-9830888741769866732009-06-17T10:01:21.166-05:002009-06-17T10:01:21.166-05:00@Anonymous - Actually, the line "Lest you thi...@Anonymous - Actually, the line "Lest you think I'm being TOTALLY selfish" is meant to be read as "I know I'm being totally selfish but here's a half-assed attempt at consideration for the previous owner." So in that, you are 100% correct.

What I didn't say in the post, mainly because I didn't want to publicly disparage my neighbors, even if they're former neighbors, is that we're pretty sure she was left behind by one of the families who recently moved out of a couple of rental houses on our block. If it makes you feel any better, which I'm sure it probably doesn't, I am still keeping an eye on Craigslist and the other local lost and founds.

As for the issue of declawing, we will have to respectfully agree to disagree. I think that even an elderly owner could have spent the extra 10 to 20 bucks to have a cat microchipped, if they were already going to the trouble of amputating her only hunting and defense mechanism in the event that this exact thing should ever happen. I don't think that makes me a better person than them. I'm the last person who should throw stones at someone for being thoughtless. But I don't know anything about them, and my primary concern is the health and safety of this cat, and I DO know that we'll do everything within our power to keep her healthy and safe and give her a fantastic life. Even if that ultimately means giving her back.Jean Bauhaushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16383317716820065046noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19927392.post-56837054116007815282009-06-17T09:26:17.359-05:002009-06-17T09:26:17.359-05:00As a long-time lurker/reader, I feel it necessary ...As a long-time lurker/reader, I feel it necessary to respond to this post.

I think you are completely overreacting to your judgements on this cat's previous owners. Have you ever considered that maybe the owner HAD to declaw the cat in order to keep it? Many apartment leases REQUIRE declawing in order to keep the pet. Isn't it better for a cat to be declawed and in a good home then to be relegated to a shelter where it may end up euthanized? Your opinion that having the cat declawed makes its previous owners less worthy of owning a cat than you is, to put it mildly, rude.

Secondly, I don't understand how someone who loves her pets as much as you do is capable of keeping this cat without trying harder to find its previous owners. If your pets were lost, you'd want whomever found your cats/dog to at least TRY to get the animals back to you. So there's no posting on Craigslist? Big deal! Maybe the previous owner is an elderly person who doesn't use the Internet or know about Craigslist, or maybe it's someone who's infirmed and can't get out to plaster telephone poles with fliers. Did you even try calling the local shelters to see if someone lost a cat of this one's description? You say that you're not being "selfish," but I'm sorry -- you are. The previous owners DESERVE your compassion and sympathy here.

Assuming that the cat is "better off" with you is the most pious, self-righteous thing you could say in this situation. You don't know the circumstances of the previous owners, or how the cat was lost. Trolling Craigslist for a lost cat ad is quite simply a half-assed attempt to return the pet to its rightful owners because you're being selfish and want to keep it for yourself. It deserves better and so does its previous owner. This isn't "finder's keepers," this is quite possibly a lost member of someone else's family. Your attitude here absolutely infuriates me. Again, if your pet was lost, you'd want it returned to you. There's a good chance that someone out there is crying over this cat, while you sit judging from behind your monitor. As a pet owner, you should be more compassionate.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19927392.post-41321602107414528702009-06-16T21:48:23.984-05:002009-06-16T21:48:23.984-05:00Hee!

Considering ..."Treated for flees."

LOL!

Considering she adopted you before you adopted her, I'd say that typo is 100% correct. :)Erin Palettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09984632637166408245noreply@blogger.com
