He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. —Psalm 113:9

When people talk about eating disorders, they are typically referring to anorexia and bulimia; but overeating, if it's out of control, can be a disorder, too. It can also be just as detrimental to your health, laying the groundwork for chronic medical illnesses such as heart disease and Adult Onset Diabetes. This is something that hits close to home for me on a lot of levels, so I'm a little dismayed that overeating is left off of this list of symptoms of eating disorders from Healthadel.

However, they have also compiled a pretty good list of Eating disorder treatments. Keeping in mind that chronic overeating is often just as much the result of low self-esteem and other deep-seated psychological problems as is starvation, the suggestions and guidelines here can also benefit friends and family of someone whose eating is out of control. I'd like to stress and echo their advice to, above all, be compassionate. Developing a healthy relationship with food can be a lifelong struggle, and often it requires first developing a healthy relationship with yourself, something that's made easier with a lot of outside love and support.
