I just got back from my walking/jogging treadmill routine at the gym. After only making it over there once last week, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do the jogging part, but I could still keep it up for a minute at a time (interspersed with two minutes of power walking). My legs, they are sore.
If I can keep up this pace for another week, I'll start adding ten seconds a week to the running part (taking ten away from the walking). Maybe I'll be able to run a full two minutes at a time before I know it. Maybe. But I think it's safe to say I won't be running any marathons any time soon, if ever.
That includes the Wirefly National Marathon. If you're going to be in the DC area on March 24th you might want to check it out. They have a route map (pdf) if you'd like to scope out a good spot to spectate, or, if you're ambitious and in shape enough to actually run in one of these things (or jog, or walk, or some combination of the two—you don't actually have to run a marathon, you know), they have online registration available.
If run/walk/jog-ing in a marathon isn't really your thing, but neither do you enjoy standing idly by, you could consider signing up to volunteer. They have plenty of positions available (have you ever wondered about the people driving along and handing out the little cups of water? Now's your chance to be one of those people). All of the proceeds from the marathon go to benefit area youth charities, including the DC Special Olympics and YMCA, so you'll be doing a good thing in the process. I can think of much worse ways to spend a Saturday in springtime.
