The Long Way Home

With the first four-issue story arc out of the way, Pink Raygun recaps and reviews Buffy: Season 8 so far. It's a pretty positive, occasionally gushy review, and a good recap if you can't bring yourself to pick up a comic but would like to know what's going on in the Buffyverse these days. I only have two nits to pick: one, I'm pretty sure the spell on Willow and Kennedy that was referenced was when Amy turned Willow into Warren, and not something more recent; and two, I take exception to the statement that Willow is everybody's favorite character. I know too many Willow haters for that to be true. I only find her mildly irritating, myself.

I read issue #4 the weekend after it came out, and I'm not sure how it escaped mention here. My review can pretty well be summed up in two words:

Like, whoa.

I have plenty more to say, of course, but it's all spoilery, so I'll keep it in the comments. Feel free to join me there.

Unrelatedly, out of curiosity I checked The Wayback Machine to see if any of my old blog designs were still up, and they are. Including this one, my personal favorite, which just might enjoy a comeback if I can figure out how to convert it to New Blogger format. I'm pretty fond of this one, too, for its cheery colorfulness and simplicity. It's just nice to be reminded that I used to actually know a thing or two about web design. I miss Web 1.0.

Wow, people, they killed Ethan Rayne! They killed him DEAD!

I really need to read this one again. Trying to gush about it two weeks after the fact, my memory's a little fuzzy. But I remember that I was glad they didn't show any of what Warren was doing to Willow, but I also thought it was a bit of a cop-out that she was able to heal herself and have no lasting effects to whatever torture he inflicted on her.

The Pink Raygun review reminded me of the whole "Kennedy died -- she's fine, it was a mystical thing!" exchange, which, reading that again, now I'm thinking Willow must have brought Kennedy back from the dead, and that's why they're "on a break." Because she can do that, if it's a mystical death. It'll be interesting to see where they go with that, if they take it anywhere at all.

Also, Slayers vs. The World: "Oh...kay" indeed. Awesome.

I really enjoyed it. A friend complained that Amy was way too weak (her devotion to Warren, with him as the instigator) but I didn't see it that way at all. It seemed to me that Amy had made the decision to save him and they were equal partners.

Poor Ethan. I'm gonna miss him.

I agree with the whole cop-out on Willow's healing...karma, kids, karma.

Stinks that we'll have to wait til August for the next installment.

Oh, and as I was looking at the blog designs, I found the old ritalin junkie link to Dancing Lessons and re-read the whole thing (so much for cleaning my house before the 'rents arrive tonight). Seriously, still some of the best Spuffy fic every written.

g: I didn't really see it that way either, but I don't think Amy has ever been portrayed as a particularly strong character.

I'm thinking Warren must have died at least a little somewhere in all the magical saveage, seeing as how the First was able to impersonate him and all. I guess that's just one of those things we're supposed to wank for ourselves.

V: Re: karma--right?! Plus, Xander loses an eye, but Willow can't even walk away from brutal torture with a scar to show for it? Really, I'm not a Willow hater, but I am tired of all the whole "Rah Rah Willow, she can do no wrong, she's the bestest and strongest of us all" attitude being conveyed here. Just whose name is on the cover, anyway?

Re: August - yes, skip months are irritating. I forgot about those, being out of my comics habit for so long.

Re: DL - heh, I went and took a peek. Man, what a trip. A sadly nostalgic, gratifying and kinda depressing trip. I'm glad the story holds up for you. I can't bring myself to read it again.
